Can an Eye Lift Make My Puffy Eyelids Look Normal Again?

If you have puffy eyelids, rest assured that you aren’t alone. For people who are concerned about their puffy eyelids, an eye lift might be just what they’ve been looking for.

The eye lift, also known as blepharoplasty surgery, is a procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue from the eyelids in order to combat sagging, puffiness, and fine lines.

While it is usually done for cosmetic reasons, an eye lift can also be used to improve older people’s field of vision. Many older people suffer reduced eyesight when their sagging eyelids get in the way of their vision.

Do I Make a Good Candidate for an Eye Lift?

The best candidates for an eye lift are people who have realistic goals and are in good health. Most patients tend to be older than 35. However, some people choose to have the surgery done while they are younger if puffy eyelids run in their family.

Are the Results Permanent?

The results from an upper-eyelid surgery tend to last for five to seven years. It is rare for lower-eyelid surgery to need to be repeated.

Preparation for the Surgery

Part of getting ready for your eye lift is arranging for a friend or family member to drive you home after the surgery. You will not be able to drive yourself home, since your eyelids will be recovering from the procedure. If possible, have a friend or family member stay with you after the surgery.

You should expect to stay home from work as well as limit the activities you perform while you recover. The most common side-effect is dry eyes. However, it doesn’t usually last for longer than two weeks.

It will be vital to have ice cubes, ice packs, small gauze pads, eye drops, clean towels, and washcloths ready for your recovery. Purchase these in advance.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

The surgery takes two hours in cases when both the lower and upper eyelids are being worked on. Local anesthesia with oral sedation is commonly administered before the procedure.

Dr. Mandal begins by creating tiny incisions in key areas of the eyelids. For the upper eyelid, the incision is made on the natural crease of the lid. For the lower eyelid, the incision is made either at the lash line or inside the lid.

She then separates the skin from the tissue beneath it and removes the sagging muscle and skin. Excess fat is repositioned or removed as needed to reduce the puffiness of the lids. After that, tiny stitches are used to close the incisions.

The Recovery Process After an Eye Lift

Recovery is quick and painless. The stitches that Dr. Mandal used will remain in the eyelids for a week at the most. Any post-surgical bruising or swelling will reduce in time, leaving the area looking more youthful and tighter.
