Ethnic Rhinoplasty Corrects the Nose While Maintaining a Natural Look

All of us are familiar with the concept of a nose job. Also known as rhinoplasty, this plastic surgery procedure is used to restructure and reshape the nose. But many people may not know the meaning of the term “ethnic rhinoplasty.”

What Is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Unlike a normal rhinoplasty, ethnic rhinoplasty is used to restructure the nose based upon certain traits unique to an ethnic group. Ethnic rhinoplasty essentially applies to non-Caucasians. Ethic rhinoplasty uses different techniques based upon the different anatomies of ethnic groups.

People of Asian, African-American, Middle Eastern, and Hispanic descent are the best candidates for an ethnic rhinoplasty. The techniques used in ethic rhinoplasty vary from individual to individual. Based upon the characteristic traits, one person may need their nose to be smaller, while another person may require their nose to be narrower. Ethnic rhinoplasty is also used to correct anomalies in the nasal bridge.

Prior to Ethnic Rhinoplasty Surgery

Make sure to discuss your medical history with your surgeon and inform her of previous drug allergies in order to rule out any complications that may present themselves during the course of the surgery. In addition, you may be asked to refrain from smoking and taking painkillers such as ibuprofen and aspirin during the weeks leading up to the surgery.

It’s best to have realistic expectations and discuss them with your surgeon before your ethnic rhinoplasty procedure. She will modify the techniques to be used in the surgery accordingly. It may be also possible beforehand to view a 3D image of what your nose will look like after the procedure.

The surgery may take anywhere between an hour to three hours depending upon the extent of the surgery. Incisions are usually made inside the nose and are hardly visible. Bone, cartilage, and soft tissue will be altered as needed in order to achieve the desired changes. The surgeon may use a bandage or a splint to support the nose after the procedure.

After the Ethnic Rhinoplasty Procedure

Immediately after the ethnic rhinoplasty procedure, patients are likely to notice swelling and bruising in the treatment area. These are the normal side effects of the surgery and will subside in time.

It is advisable to refrain from activities that involve physical exertion or have a risk of direct impact on the nose. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics and painkillers, which are to be taken as prescribed.

A follow-up visit will be scheduled a week after the surgery and any bandages or splints will be removed then. Complete recovery may take anywhere between two weeks to a month depending upon the extent of the surgery. Results can be observed once swelling and bruising has subsided.

Finding the Right Surgeon

One of the key factors that help in getting best results from an ethnic rhinoplasty is the choice of the perfect surgeon. An ethnic rhinoplasty must be performed only under the supervision of a board-certified medical professional who specializes in the needs of one or more specific ethnic groups.
