Non-Invasive Treatments For Heavy Neck

Posted: 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I’m 67 and have sagging neck skin. I’ve also been told that I have neck fat under my chin. I’m starting to see a hint of those vertical muscles bands in the front of my neck. I don’t want aggressive surgery or general anesthesia. I’m not interested in looking 20, but I would like to look a bit more refreshed and youthful. Are there any non-invasive options that could help?

Answer: Several factors can contribute to the aging neck. These include sagging neck skin, submental neck fat under the chin as well as separation of the platysmal muscle bands at the front of the neck. The choice of treatment depends not only on whether you have one or more of these factors contributing to your aging neck, but also on how extensively aged these tissues are.

In severe cases of loose neck skin, a necklift or facelift is the optimal treatment choice. With mild to moderate sagging, less invasive options include skin tightening devices such as Infini RF and Ultherapy. While I have both devices, I have found Infini RF to be much more effective than Ultherapy. Compared to Ulthera, the success of Infini is much more technique-dependent, so it’s important to have a skilled doctor for your Infini treatments.

Removal of excess neck fat can be performed with liposuction. However, if the neck fat is restricted to the submental area, which often is the case, then Kybella can be very effective. Unlike liposuction which involves surgery, Kybella is a minimalinvasive, non-surgical treatment proven to permanently reduce submental neck fat.

Very pronounced platysmal bands, the vertical muscle bands visible in front of the neck, are often a surgical problem. However, in other cases, these bands can be effectively treated with Botox. Botox treatments in this area require a higher skill and knowledge level and should be performed by a plastic surgeon experienced with non-surgical treatment of platysmal bands.

Some patients require one or more of the three treatments discussed above. The use of minimal and non-invasive treatments in combination can, in many patients, give a rejuvenated neckline without the use of aggressive surgery.

Careful consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who is skilled and experienced in a broad range of effective surgical and non-surgical options is the first step in helping you determine the most suitable treatments for your unique needs.
