Black Market Products In Facial Plastic Surgery

Posted: 3:17 p.m Friday, Feb. 17, 2017

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I’ve been getting Juvederm for $300 per syringe for my deep smile lines. My doctor retired and I’m having trouble finding someone who can match the same prices. I see some surgeons charge up to $850 per syringe. How can there be such a large variation on prices?

Answer: The “black market” for injectable fillers, Botox and other cosmetic medical products is rapidly growing. There are products made in China and products that have not undergone the rigorous U.S. testing standards to assure their highest quality.

A new patient contacted my office the other day wanting to have filler removed from her face as she had it done at a party by someone years ago. She had no idea what the product or whether she was injected by a doctor. This is not an uncommon occurrence. I frequently see new patients coming in for corrective filler treatments and for other products which they recieved at a much lower price, only to regret it later.

While these are medical procedures and all medical treatments have some risk, even in the most experienced and qualified hands, using a “black market” filler or Botox could permanently deform your face.If you’ve been getting Juvederm for $300 per syringe or any other product for too good of a price, the questions you should ask are:

  1. Are you having the treatment by an actual physician?
  2. Is your doctor a board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon with extensive training in the anatomy and function of the face?
  3. How experienced is your plastic surgeon in the particular product you are receiving?
  4. How much filler are you actually getting for the price quoted? Are you getting half of a syringe or a full syringe?
  5. Is your doctor buying the product from the company authorized to sell FDA approved products in the United States?
  6. Does the product you are receiving have the official US stamp of FDA approval on it?

You only have one face! How much value do you place on your face? Each patient must decide for themselves what their priorities are. Is it price point or a quality result? There is rarely such a thing as the best results for the cheapest price.
