Could Facelifts Be Obsolete In 10 Years?

Posted: 6:00 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2016

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I’m in my 60’s and am terrified of having major surgery like a facelift. I am open to less invasive surgery. Most plastic surgeons I’ve seen recommend a facelift. You specialize in less invasive facial rejuvenation, and I was wondering if there are any other options?

Answer: Firstly, it’s important to understand that facelifts only address specific types of aging, mainly sagging in the neck and lower face. There are many aspects of aging that a facelift will not improve such as deep smile lines, facial wrinkles, heavy eyelids, droopy mouth corners and hollow cheeks, to name a few.

After being part of the many advances over the past 20 years in practice, we have finally entered a time in the field of facial rejuvenation where procedures are not only less invasive, but also produce effective, long term results. Statistics suggest that facelift surgery is already on the decline. More patients are starting the facial rejuvenation process at an earlier age using less invasive procedures, thus, creating less of a need for aggressive facelift procedures.

This trend of starting at a younger age combined with current advances in technology will likely result in facelifts mainly being performed on those patients who have either waited too long or are complex cases. We’ve seen a similar trend in the medical industries. For example, heart surgeries are performed on more complex or severe cases, since less invasive cardiology techniques have helped so many patients who would previously would have had to have open heart surgery.

My minimal incision laser facelift consists of making 3 very tiny incisions, with one just under the chin and another behind each earlobe. This laser facelift is performed under local anesthesia during which a laser is passed under sagging neck and jowl tissues to stimulate the collagen and elastin on the undersurface of the skin. This laser technology results in effective tightening and lifting of the sagging tissues by uniquely targeting the deepest skin tissues. This laser facelift is much less invasive surgery, requires only minimal incisions and minimal anesthesia compared to a facelift. The downtime is also much less.
