Question: I heard about a new mesotherapy technique with Kybella injections to remove neck fat without surgery. Does Kybella really work?
Answer: Kybella is a non-surgical injectable which dissolves fat which your body gradually flushes away. It is injected into the fatty tissues of the neck under the chin to reduce fat and/or a “double-chin”. While Kybella is FDA approved, this not mean that treatment will necessarily give you a younger looking neck.
The biggest limitation of the most fat removal methods, whether it’s liposuction surgery, the “freeze your fat” CoolSculpt laser or Kybella injections, is that none of these procedures tighten the skin.
Once a patient reaches 35 to 40 years of age, the collagen and elastin fibers in the neck skin weaken, resulting in loose skin. If you have excess fat and have it removed, but the skin is not also tightened, the end result of fat reduction is a looser, more aged neck compared to what you originally started with.
When considering fat reduction treatments, it’s important to ask your surgeon if: 1) your skin requires tightening and 2) what options are available to tighten loose skin. Many doctors who are not plastic surgery specialists offer a range of minimally invasive treatments yet their background and knowledge of the aging process is limited compared to a board certified plastic surgeon.
A major drawback of Kybella treatments is that it does not tighten sagging or loose skin. As a result, your neck may appear worse after treatment unless your doctor simultaneously tightens the neck tissues with a surgical necklift or offers non-surgical skin tightening options such as Infini or Ultherapy.
Careful consultation with a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the first step in identifying your facial rejuvenation needs and selecting the best options for you. It is a misconception to think you should only seek a surgeon for surgery. Facial Plastic Surgeons have in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and expertise in both non-surgical and surgical facial aesthetic treatments. Each time you have a non-surgical cosmetic procedure by a less qualified doctor, you increase your risk of complications and poorer results.
