Does Voluma Really Last 2 Years?

Posted: 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2015

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I had 2 syringes of Voluma in my hollow cheeks and it started to go away in 3 to 4 months. Are the claims that Voluma lasts two years false?

Answer: Claims of Voluma lasting 2 to 3 years is not quite accurate. The studies on Voluma, show that about 2/3 of the initial amount injected lasted 2 years but much less remained beyond the 2 years. Also, Voluma only lasted 2 years when an average of 8.9 syringes was injected. When fewer syringes were used, the amount of Voluma remaining at 2 years was as low as about 20 percent.

Voluma’s cost averages $1,000 per syringe, with 8.9 syringes costing $8,900. A larger facial area may need more than 8.9 syringes whereas smaller areas require less.

To avoid disappointment from Voluma, go in with your eyes open. Be sure that you get the right amount of Voluma for adequate correction.

The first question a savvy patient should ask is if Voluma is worth $8,900 for a 2 year result with additional maintenance costs after the two year. One should also inquire about more cost-effective options. I’ve performed 1,500 syringes Bellafil and found it to be very safe and long lasting.

To the many physicians and lay people out there who’ve read false internet reports on the “dangers” of long term fillers like Bellafil, the FDA just completed a 5 year study on the cosmetic use of Bellafil showing a duration of least 5 years and a very low 1.7 percent rate of granulomas, each of which fully resolved. This landmark study reinforces the efficacy and safety of Bellafil.

It is a misconception to think you should only seek a surgeon for surgery. Facial Plastic Surgeons have in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and expertise in both non-surgical and surgical facial aesthetic treatments. Each time you have a non-surgical cosmetic procedure by a less qualified doctor, you increase your risk of complications and poorer results. When it comes to your face, why would you consider less than a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon? Log on to ABFPRS.org.
