Is Voluma A Worthwhile Investment?

Posted: 6:00 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016

By Anita Mandal, M.D.
Question: I had 2 syringes of Voluma in my hollow cheeks. It went away after 4 months. I was told by the doctor that it would last 2 years. How can a doctor get away with not disclosing the full truth about this filler?

Answer: The FDA study on Voluma shows this filler can last “up to 2 years”. What many doctors don’t tell you is that Voluma can last two years if you keep doing touch up syringes every 4 to 6 months.

Many doctors have not reviewed the details of the Voluma FDA study. Too often, doctors go by what the companies that manufacture the filler tell them. The FDA study on Voluma showed that an average of 8.9 syringes were needed in order to attain 2 year results. While 8.9 syringes were not performed all at once at the initial treatment, they were injected every 4 to 6 months, over the two year period. At an average of cost of $1000 per syringe of Voluma, that’s a total of $8900 spent on Voluma to get a two year result.

These Voluma facts comprise key information that every patient needs to know prior to making a decision about having Voluma. If it takes 8.9 syringes, performed over a 2 year period, to get a 2 year duration, the real question is how is Voluma any different from Perlane or the basic Juvederms which are also used for facial volumization.

Most fillers on the market, if they are performed every 4-6 months, can last 2 years. Voluma is a pricier version of Perlane and Juvederm XC, but I have not found that it gives superior results or longer duration.

Bellafill, on the other hand, not only gets better with time but also lasts 5 years. Bellafill’s 5 year duration is not contingent upon having repeat maintenance treatments, unlike Voluma. Bellafill costs more per syringe than Voluma, but over a 5 year period, you will likely spend much less on Bellafill than on Voluma in volumizing the same area. Bellafill is certainly a more worthwhile financial investment.
