Part II: Tips On Finding An Expert Facial Plastic Surgeon

While finding an expert plastic surgeon is key to a good result, it can be a daunting task. While board certification and training are very important, they are just the minimum requirements. Below are continued tips from last week to keep you on track.

Tip 5
Find out if your facial plastic surgeon is up to date on the latest advances in their field. A facial plastic surgeon who combines the benefits of traditional, time-honored techniques with contemporary procedures allows you to get the most from your treatments. For example, a patient who had a facelift 6 months ago by another plastic surgery consulted with me because her face was already beginning to sag. What the surgeon failed to recognize is that she also had facial volume loss and poor skin elasticity due to her age and a traditional facelift alone would not do it. She additionally needed facial volumization with long term fillers and skin tightening with Ulthera or Infini to help maintain the results of her facelift.

Tip 6
If you are looking for a minimal or non-invasive procedure, do not assume you should seek a non-surgeon. Finding a surgeon who is experienced in both is the best of both worlds. In the past 20 years, facial plastic surgery has seen many advances with an explosion in less invasive procedures. We now know how much of facial aging cannot be corrected with surgery. An expert facial plastic surgeon can customize the right combination of surgery and non-surgical treatments for your unique facial rejuvenation needs.

Tip 7
Each time you have a cosmetic procedure by a less qualified doctor, you increase your chances of an unsatisfactory result. With so many doctors who claim to “specialize”, are not trained or certified in plastic surgery or carry “fake” board certifications not recognized by any legitimate authority, it’s even more important to seek a legitimate specialist. A woman consulted with me about the lack of results from Sculptra treatments which she recieved from a neurologist who she paid $7000. While a neurologist is an MD and can probably take a quick course to learn how to inject fillers, what type of aesthetic background and anatomic knowledge would you expect from a neurologist compared to a facial plastic surgeon?
