The Whisper Lift represents the newest generation of quick recovery facelifts. Much less invasive than a traditional or full facelift, it offers a youthful, beautiful refreshed appearance without an “operated” or unnatural look. Typically performed in just 90 minutes with only local anesthesia, the Whisper lift is also known as an “awake facelift”, allowing your quick return to most daily activities within 4-7 days.
Best candidates for the Whisper Lift:
- Patients with mild to moderate sagging of the cheek, jowls and neck
- Patients who do not want a traditional or full facelift
- Patients who want to avoid a pulled, unnatural or “wind blown” appearance
- Younger patients who have mild laxity in the jowls and neck and are not ready for an aggressive facelift
- Mature patients who have previously undergone a facelift, continue to age and just need a “tuck”
- Patients with busy lifestyles who are looking for a procedure with less downtime
- Patients who do not want general anesthesia or IV sedation
- Patients who want a procedure that is cost effective without compromising safety or quality
- Patients who want a lower risk procedure
More than any other part of the body, your face can readily give away your true age. Skin and muscle laxity as well as loss of fatty tissue set in over time. This results in poor definition along the jaw and neck lines, turning down of the mouth corners and hollowing of the cheeks. The face takes on a square or pear shape as tissue moves away from the cheeks and into the jaw and neck, making you appear tired, sad or even angry.
The Whisper can improve these signs of aging. During the actual procedure, the incisions are hidden in your natural creases around the ear to allow them to ultimately fade. The thin layer of muscle, fat and fibrous tissue just under the skin, is known as SMAS and platysma. This soft tissue is lifted and repositioned in the areas of the cheeks, jowl and neck. It is then tightened using an innovative plication technique and further secured to certain fixation points. This process re-establishes a more youthful facial contour with improved definition at the jaw and neck lines. The loose overlying skin is artfully redraped, rather than overpulled, atop the newly created contours. Any excess skin present after re-draping is removed, meticulously trimmed and lined up to assure that the incisions are well camouflaged. The combination of effective muscle tightening with careful skin draping and excision is key to avoiding an unnatural, “windblown” appearance.
Technique-specific Benefits of the Whisper Lift When Compared to a Traditional or Standard Facelift:
- Less separation of skin from muscle resulting in fewer complications, less bruising and swelling and more natural results
- Preservation SMAS integrity, resulting in quicker recovery, significantly lower risk of facial nerve injury and more effective muscle vector
- No incisions under the chin
- Shorter incisions around the ears
- Minimized incisions within the scalp
- Much lower risk to facial nerve
- Direction of skin vector more effectively counteracts the forces of gravity
- Minimal to no shift in hairline
- Lower likelihood of bald spots
The Whisper Lift can erase 5-15 years from your face without the pulled or unnatural look of more aggressive facelifts. After surgery, you still look like yourself, but are a more youthful, refreshed, rested version. People often ask our patients if they have a new hairstyle or just returned from a vacation.

Q: How do I know if I am a good candidate for the Whisper Lift?
A: Best candidates for the Whisper Lift have good bone structure, mild to moderate laxity of soft tissue and realistic expectations.
Q: What makes the Whisper Lift different from a traditional facelift?
A: Unlike a traditional or full facelift which can take 4-8 hours of surgery, the Whisper Lift typically involves 90 minutes of operating time. It is performed with local anesthesia to avoid the risks of intravenous or general anesthesia commonly used for traditional facelifts.
Most patients can return to work or their routine activities within 4 to 7 days, unlike the four to six week recovery of a full facelift. The incisions are smaller, the muscle integrity is kept intact and is there is lower risk to the facial nerve with the Whisper Lift.
Q: Where are the incisions placed in the Whisper Lift?
A: The incisions are strategically hidden in the wrinkles and natural creases around your ears. Unlike a traditional facelift, the incisions are not under the chin nor do they extend into the scalp as much. The Whisper lift incisions are much smaller and better camouflaged than those of a traditional facelift. There is also less chance of hair loss or shifting of your hairline. Once fully healed, patients can comfortably wear their hair short or tie it back without being concerned that the incisions will be obvious.
Q: Is the muscle also tightened or is it just the skin that is pulled during the Whisper Lift procedure?
A: Both the muscle as well as the skin are addressed in the Whisper Lift. Dr. Mandal tightens the underlying SMAS muscle first, artfully redrapes the overlying skin and removes only excess skin. This approach avoids the overpulled, “wind blown” look. In a traditional facelift, the muscle(SMAS) is cut all the way through and then tightened; this approach not only compromised muscle integrity but also increases risk of injury to the facial nerve. With the Whisper Lift, the SMAS is tightened, rather than cut, using a special plication technique. The SMAS is also repositioned by securing it to specific fixation points. This approach preserves muscle integrity, reduces the of risk facial nerve injury, lessens downtime and gives a very natural result.
Q: How long does a Whisper Lift last?
A: The Whisper Lift can take 5-15 years off your face. If you look ten years younger as a result of surgery, 15 years from now, you will have aged but can still look 10 years younger than had you not undergone surgery. While the effects of the Whisper Lift can be considered fairly permanent, surgery does not halt the aging process as you continue to change with age. The bottom line is that there is no set time that any type of facelift will last. How soon you have a procedure done again is a measure of how fast you age and everyone ages differently. Nonetheless, most patients hold up well for 5-15 years before they consider additional treatment to the same area. In summary, the youthful effect of surgery is preserved over time even though the aging process continues.
Q: How does the Whisper Lift differ from other types of lifts such as the Weekend facelift, Lifestyle Lift, Lunchtime Lift, Liquid Lift, Vampire Lift?
A: New, catchy names for facelifts spring up regularly. Separating fads from credible facelift procedures can be a challenge. While viable surgical procedures with less downtime do exist, quick fixes that promise significant results with no disruption to one’s lifestyle promote unrealistic patient expectations. Its important to appreciate that Surgery is Surgery and there is always a minimal period of healing and recovery afterwards.Lunchtime Lift: This is also known as the Feather lift or Thread lift. In this procedure, a thread is inserted under the skin to lift sagging neck and jowl tissue. This is not a true facelift and Dr. Mandal does not perform this procedure due to its short lived and unsatisfactory results.
Lifestyle Lift: The advertisements for this minifacelift claim that it is completed in an hour or less and showcases quite amazing “after” results. Dr. Mandal does not believe that a one hour mini facelift can give effective long lasting results in patients who are strong candidates for a traditional facelift.
Liquid Lift: The Liquid Lift is a very effective procedure when used on the right patient. However, its name is deceptive since it is not surgical. The Liquid lift consists of treatment with injectables to improve lines and hollows. It does not actually lift sagging jowl or neck tissue. Your doctor must be careful to only promise what the Liquid Lift will truly deliver. Dr. Mandal performs the Liquid Lift quite often with a high level of patient satisfaction. The Liquid Lift is not, however, a substitute for surgery as it does not lift significant soft tissue sag.
Weekend Facelift: This procedure can be ideal for patients with very minimal tissue laxity in their late 30′s and early 40′s. The majority of Dr. Mandal’s patients would not benefit from this procedure since it is too minimal to give effective, lasting results.
Vampire Lift: This is another misleading name in that it is not a surgical facelift.
It consists of mixing your own blood with a product called Sephyl and injecting this preparation into facial wrinkles and hollows. So far, it has received mixed reviews and does not lift or tighten facial sag.
Q: What are the risks of the Whisper Lift?
A: Every surgery, no matter how minimally invasive, has risks. Accepting this fact is an important part being a realistic patient. Medicine and surgery are not an exact science. Even a perfectly performed surgical technique on the ideal patient has risks. For each procedure, there are general and procedure-specific risks. General risks for any type of facelift includes bleeding, infection, scarring, unsatisfactory result as well as reaction to anesthesia. While the specific risks for all facelifts include injury to the facial nerve, there is significantly lower risk with the Whisper Lift compared to traditional facelifts. Fortunately, the Whisper Lift is a very safe procedure and, compared to more aggressive facelifts, the risks are very low.
Q: Can men have a Whisper Lift?
A: Dr. Mandal commonly performs the Whisper Lift on both men and women. In fact, many men who have reservations about having a traditional or full facelift are much more likely to have the Whisper Lift. While the rejuvenation goals of a Whisper Lift are basically the same in both men and women, the approach in men is slightly different. Because of the facial hair in men, the incisions are placed to accommodate this pattern.
Q: What is the best age to have a Whisper Lift?
A: There is no ideal age for any type of facelift or rejuvenation procedure. The degree of soft tissue laxity in the area of your face and neck has more to do with the timing of a facelift than your actual age. The majority of my patients who undergo a Whisper Lift are in their late 40′s to 70′s. I have, however, performed facelifts on patients as young as 37 years. Each person is different and ages differently. Younger patients who are not yet candidates for a traditional facelift can have the Whisper Lift for very mild sagging. Being pro-active with early intervention can maintain a natural look and minimize dramatic or sudden changes in your appearance. Mature patients with moderate sagging of the cheek, jowl and neck can also have the Whisper Lift. On the other hand, patients who have waited too long and allowed for significant changes from age to set in may require an aggressive facelift.
Q: What can I expect during my recovery?
A: Postoperative recovery from the Whisper Lift is minimal. The night after surgery is the most uncomfortable due to the compression dressing that is typically removed within 24 hours. Thereafter, most patients feel tightness or pulling sensation (which is actually good) that is controlled with prescription medication. By the end of one week after surgery, most swelling and tenderness is usually limited to the incision areas near the ears and can be easily be covered by your hair. Swelling can be further minimized by keeping the head in a slightly elevated position when sleeping. It is also important to avoid direct sunlight and aggressive physical activity. The results of surgery can be seen immediately following surgery, however, most patients feel they are ready to face the world within 4-7 days.
Q: Does Dr. Mandal perform other types of facelifts?
A: Yes! In addition to the Whisper Lift which is a quick recovery facelift, Dr. Mandal also performs minifacelifts, traditional or standard facelifts, jowl lifts, neck lifts as well as non-surgical lifts. Each patient ages differently so is unique in their aging concerns. The most suitable type of lift is best determined during a thorough consultation with Dr. Mandal.
Q: What if I prefer to have my procedure under IV sedation?
A: While the Whisper Lift is most commonly performed under local anesthesia, it can also be done using IV sedation or general anesthesia. The choice of anesthesia depends on your medical history and your unique circumstances.
Q: What is it like to have a Facelift with local anesthesia?
Q: Are the results natural looking?
A: Dr. Mandal’s patients are consistently impressed with how natural looking her results are. A more defined jawline and a tighter neckline is very youthful looking for nearly any patient. With her years of experience as a facial specialist, Dr. Mandal combines her surgical expertise and artistic skill with the latest techniques to give the most natural, long lasting results.
Q: Can the Whisper Lift be combined with other procedures?
A: Yes! The Whisper Lift is commonly performed at the same time as
neck liposuction,
upper and lower eyelid surgery as well as platysmaplasty (tightening of muscle bands under the chin).
Injectables fillers can be used for the finishing touch to treat finer lines and facial hollows that cannot be corrected by surgery. Whether you are a candidate for these additional procedures can be determined by your plastic surgeon during the consultation.
Q: Can I still have the Whisper Lift if I previously had a minifacelift or facelift?
A: Yes. Nearly half of Dr. Mandal’s patients undergoing the Whisper Lift have had a previous lifting procedure by another surgeon.
